Reputable source from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics which is updated every two years and is used for career information in most occupations. The North American Industry Classification System(NAICS)is a classification system used by the U.S., Canadian and Mexican governments to group companies into industries. By agreeing to use the same industry definitions, these three countries are able to produce comparative statistics. It is also available on the web at:

Standard Industrial Classification Manual. Created in 1934 and last updated in 1987, the Standard Industrial Classification Code was used to classify businesses in the United States by products and services. Though still used today in many businesses, it is no longer updated. In 1997 the NAICS system was introduced to replace the SIC.

  American Community Survey
Provides up-to-date statistical summaries based on US Census data for states, selected cities(with populations greater than 65,000)and counties.
Web-based application developed by the U.S. Census Bureau that can retrieve data from federal, state, and local sources for analyzing a community.
Datanet is an online system consisting of summarized statistical information designed to serve Minnesota's governments, businesses, schools, nonprofit agencies and citizens. The system contains statistics about social, economic and demographic conditions in Minnesota. Datanet delivers 200,000 reports, maps and data downloads annually.
  Minnesota Secretary of State
Can search for companies that have filed with the Secretary of State.
  Minnesota State Demographic Center
Distributes demographic data from state, U.S. Census Bureau and other sources; also provides access to analytic reports produced by Minnesota Planning, a state agency. Includes access to MnPlan's Datanet, providing demographic data from the 1990 and 2000 US Census as well as state projection estimates
  RMA Annual Statement Studies
Contains composite financial data on manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing, service, and contracting lines of business. Arranged by SIC and NAICS code, this work makes it possible to compare one company's performance relative to other companies in the same line of business.

Contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States and selected international data. This is also the standard guide to sources of other data from the Census Bureau, other Federal agencies, and private organizations. Is available both in print and online. Publication discontinued with the 130th edition in 2011. Taken over by ProQuest and found in print in Reference Room.
